What We Did This Weekend:
Trunk or Treat and Pizza
Friday night was our ward's "Fall Festival." Ugh. I hate how it has somehow become politically incorrect to call a ward party in mid- to late-October what it really is: a Halloween Party. Brooke and I went as a pair of Newsies. We were actually quite pleased with the costumes we pulled together an hour before the party; and the only prop we had to buy were some newspapers. There were about eight or nine crock pots full of chili for the ward's annual chili cook-off. There were also kids in Halloween Fall costumes running around, having a good time in the gym. They had games and crafts on one half of the gym, and Brookie took some pictures of the cute kids in our ward.
After dinner and the announcement of the costume contest winners, everyone cleaned up the gym and went outside for the Trunk or Treat. There were some great trunks. Apparently the Fall Festival is our ward's big party. So everyone goes all out. There was a trio of minivans that arranged themselves to create a small fun house. They had all sorts of lighting effects and I even saw a bubble maker. Most other trunks had some spider webs and strings of orange lights. Then there was our trunk. I turned our Scion xB into the xBeast.
I found some old bed sheets and spray painted a giant skull, cut strips for the teeth which doubled as the entryway, and had some spooky organ music blaring on the speakers. And, while sitting behind the sheets on the back of our xB, I occasionally bounced the car so that the entire skull (which was also lit by a flashlight from the inside) shook with horror.
Bhwahahahaha!
It was brilliant. Brooke sat outside the giant skull to tell the kids they needed to go inside to get their candy. I sat inside waiting for our "victims." Some of the smallest kids had the biggest eyes you've ever seen. They were forced to choose between their fear or their love of candy. The candy mostly won out. And at the end, when the candy was gone, there was a group of kids that poked their heads inside, I scare them, and they'd run squealing, only to return a few seconds later. Next year I think we'll add a fog machine...
Saturday Brooke had a Young Womens' volleyball tournament to attend in the morning, so I stayed home to clean and work in the backyard. That night we went to my favorite restaurant (Waldo Pizza) to celebrate National Pizza Month with Jordan and Bonnie Call, their daughter Heather, and Bonnie's sister Becky and her husband Aaron. Good times. Good times.
The Netflix selections we watched were Newsies (1992), Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), Ghost Busters (1984) and perhaps the strangest, most oddly morbid show I've ever seen, Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) starring Cary Grant. It was mildly disturbing. Luckily, it was so funny that you don't have much time to think about how creepy the whole situation is. This one is highly recommended if you haven't seen it.
So that's what we did this weekend. Enjoy the slideshow (the blurs of color in the xBeast pictures are small children running in fear).
