What We Did This Weekend:
Louisburg Cider Mill
Saturday morning we drove 40 minutes into the country to the Louisburg Cider Mill in Louisburg, KS. A few weeks ago Brookie found some coupons for a free half-dozen cider donuts with the purchase of a gallon of apple cider. Free donuts? Free donuts just for buying something that we'd love to buy anyway? Well, okay.
The cider mill was really cool, and we look forward to making this a yearly family tradition. Their country store was full of apple butter, pumpkin butter, peach butter, various jellies, fresh cider, and all sorts of delicious goodies. The counter was lined with free samples for everyone to try, which, after tasting, prompted us to buy a little more than we had initially planned. We left with a gallon of cider, 18 of their special cider donuts, and a pint of both apple and pumpkin butter. We also bought a small hot apple cider to share as we sat outside and tasted the donuts.
On our way home, driving through the country to get back to the highway, Brookie mentioned that a few teachers from her middle school live in Louisburg. We both agreed that it was nice, but it was a little too rural for our tastes. We like the country, but just for short visits. I would hate to have to drive 10-20 minutes into town every time we needed something. I hope the words, "Honey, I'm going to town to buy milk" are words I never say aloud (unless, of course, there is a fabulous supermarket down the street called "Town," in which case it would be perfectly acceptable). Nope. The only going to town we're likely to take part in is describing the way I devour fresh, hot pizza, or maybe going downtown, or going back to town after a visit to the country, like we did on Saturday.
Church on Sunday was very fun. It was the annual primary program in sacrament meeting, which is always one of our favorite meetings of the year. We may not have kids of our own yet, but we still love watching our friends' kids being kids in front of the congregation. There were some especially funny moments in today's service. Kids are great.
And that's what we did this weekend! If you live in the area and have a chance, go visit the Louisburg Cider Mill. You and your family will have a great time. And tell them Todd and Brookie sent you (though I doubt anyone there would know what you were talking about).
Go to the board!
We visited that cider mill a couple of times last year and loved it! We checked out Dunn Cider Mill this year, since it was closer, but it wasn't nearly as cool (though we liked the cider better), so we probably will make the drive to Louisburg next time. I agree that visiting a cider mill each fall is a great tradition.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like great cider. We have a tradition with Jimbob's brother's family and we actually press our own cider. It looks a little like canal water, but tastes fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI love the Primary program too! It's always one of my favorite sacrament meetings of the year.
Happy Thanksgiving to you both!
@Connie and Jimbob
ReplyDeleteI actually thought about you guys when we were at the cider mill because I remembered your cider. And you're right– it is fabulous.
