Sharing Time: Snow Cookies

I hate snow and cold and the outdoors. But yesterday we woke up to falling flakes and our grass covered in a white blanket of snow.

We couldn't believe it; just last week we were in short sleeves. When I saw it, I have to admit that I felt a hint of excitement, but not because I was going to go outside to do something crazy like make a snow man or snow angel, but because that meant that Todd and I would get to make snow cookies! Snow cookies are what we make on the first day that it snows (they are also known as chocolate crinkles). The reason why we make them on the first day it snows is because they look like the ground with snow on it, of course!

It's a fun little thing to do - and really helps with something as awful as the first snow of the season by turning it into something fun, because who doesn't love a good warm cookie on a cold day? If you want to make this a tradition too, here is the recipe. Enjoy!

Snow Cookies
1/2 cup shortening
1 2/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs
2 ounces baking chocolate, melted
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup milk
enough powdered sugar to roll cookies in

  1. Cream together shortening, sugar, and vanilla. Add the eggs and melted chocolate.

  2. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. Add the dry ingredients and the milk to the mixture (alternately).

  4. Chill dough for 3 hours.

  5. Roll into 1 inch balls, roll in powdered sugar, and bake at 350 for 15 minutes on greased cookie sheets.

  1. I love the idea of turning an event like the first snow into a personal holiday that requires baked goods. Well done.
