What We Did This Weekend:
Hangin' with Mr. Cameron

This weekend was nice and long thanks to two people: Martin Luther King, Jr. and my brother Cameron. Cameron took the chance to spend the three-day weekend at our place, so we tried to do a bunch of stuff we didn't do the last time he was here.

To be entirely honest, our weekend was too full to adequately document the entire thing. We somehow filled every minute of nearly every day without burning ourselves out. To me, that's the definition of a successful weekend.

Cameron arrived late Thursday night. Brooke and I had been so busy with work all week that neither of us were able to take Friday off, so he just had to read textbooks for his new college courses and watch Netflix offerings all day.

When he was here in the summer we had planned to take him to one of our most favorite restaurants: RC's Back Door Bar & Grill. Fantastic home-cooking. And, armed with our trusty 2-for-1 discount cards, surprisingly affordable. It's always busy, but that evening in June when we tried to take Cameron it was closed. It was Saturday at 5:00pm, but it was closed. We had no idea what was going on, and neither did the other customers that showed up while we were there and went away hungry. Turns out, the family that owns the restaurant had a wedding that night.

Lucky for Cameron, no weddings on Friday, and he was treated to heaps and mounds of sheer deliciousness in the form of the largest Chicken Fried Chicken this side of the Mississippi, floating atop a lake of country gravy, with sides of mashed potatoes, green beans, and a buttery biscuit. Brookie order the old stand-by, chicken tenders. And I had the broiled chicken breast. Yummy.

After dinner we went to find Incred-a-Bowl, a family-friendly bowling alley in Overland Park, KS. It's the first non-smoking bowling option we've found since moving from Utah in 2006. It was so much fun. We love bowling, we just never go.

After bowling, it was time to go home and watch a couple episodes of Psych.

Saturday was definitely packed. We slept in because we could, and then I made pancakes from scratch. Before long, it was time to go. I had a dentist appointment to repair a filling, and Cameron and Brookie came along. I know that a trip to the dentist is always a priority when I go on vacation, so we were glad to give that opportunity to Cameron while he was in town. An hour later my filling was fixed and my cheek and lip were sliding off my face.

Because I couldn't feel my face, lunch at Subway was fun. It's hard to keep food in your mouth when half of your face is not responding as it should.

Saturday was the first of a two-day Royals FanFest at the Overland Park Convention Center. It wasn't until we'd been there for about 30 minutes, that my lower lip came back to life. Brookie and I went to the FanFest last year, so we were excited to go back. Here's a video I put together from footage we took while we were there (there are four people that take some batting practice in the video--one of them is the Designated Hitter for the Royals, Billy Butler, and three of them are not):

And here are a few still shots that Cameron took with our camera. If you really want to see them all, you can check them out here. It was really nice to have some one with us to take pictures because otherwise, we never get a shot of the two of us together.

By the way, if you're trying to get in shape and lose a few extra pounds, try to avoid taking pictures with a professional athlete. Just a thought.

And that jacket pictured above was just $10. When we saw the price tag we knew we just had to buy it for our future son or daughter. I'm already jealous of my kid. Is that a bad sign?

But, Brookie did buy a little something for me: a pair of baseball pants. But, not just any baseball pants. They were part of a Kansas City Monarchs throw-back uniform that the Royals wore for a game. They're sweet. If I ever get a jersey to match, I will be a Monarch for Halloween every year.

After a few fun hours at the FanFest, we went North to my favorite sit-down pizza restaurant, Waldo Pizza. It was our first visit this year, which meant that it was our first visit since we cared about what we shoved in our [pizza] pie holes. We asked, but of course, they didn't have any nutrition facts on their food. But, they have the best pizza. I love it. And we couldn't forego the cheese crusts. Cameron and Brookie also enjoyed it. And, when dinner was over, we went home to finish off disk 3 of Psych, season 1.

Sunday after church and an awesome homemade manicotti dinner, we watched The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. None of us had seen it in theaters. We really enjoyed it.

Monday was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Both Brookie and I had the day off, so we made a plan and got out of the house before lunch time. Brookie looked up the three Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in the Kansas City area, mapped them out, and found the background story on one of them. The first building we saw was the Community Christian Church just East of the Plaza on Main Street.

After that we went to the Westport area and found this one:

And, only 15 minutes North of downtown we visited this home near Briarcliff Village. The mailbox still had the name of the original owner, although we are not sure if they still live there or not.

Having checked three more buildings off of Brookie's bucket list, we caught a matinee of Bedtime Stories, starring Adam Sandler. I thought it was a fun show. Brookie thought it was weird, and it was apparent that she either never saw or didn't remember seeing any previews for the movie, because it was not what she expected.

For lunch we ate at the Harvey House Diner in Union Station. We were surprised to find a display of large sculptures in the main lobby of Union Station made from canned food items. My favorite was the Super Mario. Brookie liked the Panda.

And of course, we couldn't pass up this photo opportunity:

We killed another hour and a half at Crown Center before taking Cameron to the airport for his 7:00pm flight. Like I said, it was a really full weekend, but it was really fun too. And that's what we did last weekend.
