What We Did This Weekend...Dog

Our brother Cameron flew in to Kansas City late Thursday night, to spend the weekend with us. We found out earlier that day that Missy and Weston had their baby, so we're now Aunt Brookie and Uncle Todd (has a nice ring to it, right?). The next morning we tried to sleep in a little bit, but Brooke still had to work for half of the day. Cameron and I went with her so she could show him around the middle school, and then he and I tried to kill three hours, but ended up only slightly injuring 90 minutes. Soon we were back at the school and in the Mac lab, surfing the web.

When Brooke was done with lunch, we took Cameron to eat at Culver's, one of our favorite places to eat. After inhaling our burgers, fries, and homemade rootbeer, we drove downtown through the "mansions" just off of State Line Road, just to see how the other half's au pairs live. We made our way to the Crown Center and stopped at Sheridan's for a taste of their frozen custard. Crown Center is pretty much just another shopping mall, so when we had finished our treats, we walked across the street to the Hallmark headquarters and took a tour, which I highly recommend if you're ever in Kansas City.

When we finished the tour, we went home to change, and made a pit stop at Gordman's, where Cameron purchased a powder blue Alex Gordon #4 t-shirt for the Royals game. I had spoken with Johnny earlier that day and he was leaving three tickets for us. The Royals had lost 11 games in a row, and we were hoping to see the streak end. We drove over to the ballpark, paid for parking, and found the player will call window. But unfortunately, they couldn't find our tickets. John had forgotten to leave our tickets, which is understandable. He has a lot on his plate right now, and had been able to bring one of his premature twins home that day, so I can't blame him at all. So we plunked down $13 a piece for our tickets and went inside. Luckily it was Buck Night, so hotdogs, drinks, and peanuts were all $1. Few things taste better than a dollar-hotdog.

The game started out well. The Royals got out to a 4-1 lead, but a pair of homeruns gave the Indians the lead 5-4. Johnny had a couple of doubles, so he was having a good game, but it seemed as Fate would not allow the losing streak to be broken that night. There were multiple chances to tie the game leading up to the final inning, but the Royals either squandered them or fell victim to a fantastic defensive play.

Saturday morning we left for Lee's Summit, MO for our favorite breakfast spot, Neighbor's Cafe. It's a great little family-owned restaurant in historic downtown Lee's Summit. They have some awesome biscuits and gravy. After breakfast Cameron and I killed another hour while Brooke had a meeting for Young Womens' Camp. When we met back up, we headed off for the Negro League Baseball Museum. There was a really cool discussion that day with a local sports writer along with a pair of former major league pitchers that you can read about on my baseball blog.

By the time we left the museum, it was starting to get hot, so we drove through the Power and Light District and pointed out the new arena, the Sprint Center, before arriving at the Midwest's largest farmer's market at City Market. We browsed the plants and produce, bought some goodies and found some good smoothies to cool us off.

Johnny had text messaged me to apologize for not leaving ticket Friday night, and offered to leave some for us Saturday night, so we went home to check to see if they were there and to rest for a bit. Turns out, everyone really wanted to rest for more than a bit. I fell asleep on the bed, Cameron was out on the futon, and I found Brooke sleeping in the front room on the couch. I woke up, checked on the tickets, and then woke everyone else. We were planning on eating at another favorite restaurant of ours, R.C.'s, but they were closed for the weekend because of a family marriage. So we drove back to our neighborhood and gave a local BBQ restaurant a try and were pleasantly surprised.

We arrived at the stadium about 20 minutes after the first pitch, but we didn't miss too much. It turns out that Saturday was a much better night for the Royals, as they broke their 12-game losing streak.

Sunday we went to church and then visited the Church History sites in Liberty and Independence. The Jail was especially cool, and was not what I expected.

Monday, Cameron and I played Xbox while Brooke worked another half-day. After lunch we took him up to the Legends shopping area where he found a few things to spend his money on before leaving Kansas City. The Chamber of Commerce would be proud. We finished our shopping and dropped him off at the airport for his quick trip home.
