Memorial Day Weekend
Three-day weekends are so much fun. Plus, you don't need to get all of the dishes done Sunday night because you will have time to finish them up on Monday. Anyway, here's what we did this weekend.
Friday night = Date Night. We ate at a new place called The Mixx near the Kansas City Public Library by the Plaza. The food was pretty good, but probably not for everyone. They have enough normal food there for unadventurous patrons, but they also provide taste combinations that push the limits of our self-proclaimed sophisticated pallets. For example, with my Cobb wrap, I opted for the sweet potato fries which came with a pineapple-curry aioli for dipping. It definitely offered something new to my taste buds. We ended up with three meals because Brookie got a mini salad and a half-order of pasta, either of which would have been plenty of food for her.
After dinner we walked for a bit at the Plaza. Brookie let us go to the Apple store where we got to play with their newest revolutionary magical device, the iPad. I was impressed. Too bad there are so many things on our "this-needs-fixing-and-or-replacing" list. Priorities are so overrated. Who's with me on that? Anyone? Anyone?
Saturday we hit the Farmers Market again. We bought five peaches for $5 based on the samples they were offering. But by the time we went to use them on Monday, three-and-a-half of them had gone bad. Oh well. We just won't buy from that farmer again. But we did get a chance to visit our new favorite bakery, Bloom Baking Co., while we were there. We've also found a grower that sells delicious European cucumbers for $1.50 (or $1 if you buy four or more).
We finished up our Saturday working in the yard pulling weeds, stopping by a graduation open house for one of Brookie's young women, and running some errands.
Sunday we slept in again (one of the best parts of a church block that starts at 11:00am), went to church for our usual three-plus hours, and came home to fix dinner. Some friends of ours just received some really good news, so we invited them over Sunday afternoon to eat with us. After dinner we all went downtown and met up with some other friends at the Liberty Memorial for the annual Memorial Eve Kansas City Symphony "Celebration at the Station." It's one of the most patriotic events we've ever attended. We go every year, the Sunday evening before Memorial Day. They play great music, and do a great job honoring our past and present soldiers. We always come away from that concert feeling totally uplifted. In describing it to one of our friends, I told him it makes me proud to be an American and proud to be a Kansas Citian as well.
Monday was Memorial Day. We both had the day off so we slept in again. We went to the gym just before 10:00am. After working out and cleaning up, we went to breakfast at the retro-themed Harvey House Diner inside Union Station downtown. By the time we were through with our breakfast, it was time to head over to Kauffman Stadium for day-game Royals baseball. They lost, but we still had fun. And we found our future season-ticket seats. Last time we went to a game we saw a pair of seats all by themselves. In the upper deck towards the end of the stadium there was a row that was only two seats long. When we bought our seats for Monday's game we told them where we wanted to sit, and the man helping us paused, looked at us and told us there were still lots of seats available. We thanked him, but explained that we had our reasons for wanting those seats. They worked out really well and we enjoyed the entire game without nearby fans forcing us to relocate.
After the game we went home and fired up the barbecue for some burgers with friends that night.
And now it's Tuesday. We didn't (couldn't) sleep in today. Time to go to work and be productive. But, that's what we did this weekend.
Go to the board!
