What We Did This Weekend
Postponed Due to Rain

Other than watch BYU trounce the UCLA Bruins on Saturday afternoon, there wasn't much going on for us this past weekend. Friday after work we went to the gym in the rain, and on our way back home the Emergency Broadcast System issued a Tornado warning in our general area. Tornado sirens were also going off when we pulled into our driveway, so we waited things out for about an hour before going to dinner.

We had tickets to Les Miserables at the Starlight Theater for Saturday nights show, but heavy rain was supposed to continue until the early Sunday, so before dinner Friday, we went to exchange our tickets for Tuesday night's production. We couldn't believe there were people filing into the theater with umbrellas and ponchos for Friday's show. It was pouring rain -- enough so that I didn't feel comfortable driving on the interstate. We later learned that the sound equipment had been damaged and Starlight had to cancel that day.

The rain continued, the water in the gutters began creeping into the streets as storm drains clogged and intersections flooded. Things were even worse on the Kansas side of the state line, which was where we were planning on eating. Weston gave me a gift certificate to a steakhouse near by our first apartment in Overland Park, KS, and we used it Friday night. The atmosphere was, well, a little white trash, but the food was outstanding. It's probably been about 10 months since I'd had a good steak, so thanks for that gift certificate, Weston. Brooke ordered some chicken tenders and declared them to be either the best or second-best she'd ever had (only a side-by-side comparison could truly decide the issue, which was an impossibility that night).

So, with most of our weekend washed out, how about this: What We Did Earlier This Week?

Brooke told me on the phone Monday at lunch that she had a surprise for me. When she got home from work she showed me a pair of Royals tickets that she had been given that day: third row, first-base side, about 60 feet past first base. They were the best seats we'd ever had at a game. Sure, the Royals might be bad again this year. But they're our team. And, when we're leading by just a few runs going into the ninth inning and Joakim Soria jogs out from the bullpen to the tune of "Welcome to the Jungle," and the crowd actually cheers harder than they do for the Hotdog Race bit, we almost feel like we're actually "Big League." He came in, pitched to three batters and recorded his 38th save of the season.

Tuesday night was our rain check for Les Miserables. The weather was tremendous, though slightly chilly after the sun went down, but about what you would expect in the middle of September. The show was equally as good. I knew all of the songs, and I'd seen the movie, but the musical was stupendous. It was most likely the best show I have ever seen. I've had the music stuck in my head ever since the curtain call. The vocals were easily the best we heard all season, and the scene devices they used were incredible. I especially enjoyed the artistic backdrops projected on the screens behind the actors. It was the last show of the 2008 season, so now we'll have to wait until next summer before returning, and we will return (though you can bet that it won't be for Mamma Mia. That announcement was enough to disuade us from another season ticket purchase).

Anyway, that's what we did earlier this week.
