What We Did This Weekend:
Temple Trip and the Remodeling Show
First of all: Wow. I never thought that punctuation would be so popular. That turned out to be a pretty enlightening discussion. However, though it's against my better judgment, instead of explaining the proper use of commas, here is our weekend in review:
We've lived in Kansas City for about two and a half years. We've been able to do and to see most of what she has to offer. But until Friday night, we had never been to Kemper Arena or the American Royal. There was a combination Home Remodeling/Lawn and Garden show there over the weekend, so we thought it would be fun to check it out.
Remodeling has been on our minds lately. Now that our adoption application has been approved, we could get a call at any time that would change our lives. But our modest home currently has two bedrooms and one bath. It's just right for the two of us, but it could get cramped in a hurry, especially with me working at home. I'd like to build some stairs up to the attic area and convert it to some kind of master-bedroom-suite-loft-thing, maybe with a partition for my office too. Unfortunately, I have no idea if we could do that, or how much it would cost. I was hoping to do a little research at this show Friday night.
But the show wasn't what I expected it to be. Instead of informative experts explaining the nuances of electrical work to would be do-it-yourselfers like me, it was isles and isles of vendors who wanted our business. And besides that, most of the products they were pitching were aimed towards the higher-end of the income spectrum. Brooke had fun though. We should have spent more time in the lawn and garden portion of the convention center. There, we had a nice chat with a man selling super-sonic mole chasing sticks. We almost bought three of them, but took a walk to think it over, and never went back.
Even if the show wasn't all I thought it would be, it was fun to actually do something on a date night besides go to dinner and go home and watch our most recent Netflix DVD.
After last week's indecision surrounding where to eat on date night, we decided that we would need to accept the fact that Panera Bread and Applebee's are perfectly good choices, even if we choose them more often than other restaurants. This week, on our way downtown to the show, we chose Panera. It was across the street from the Crown Center, kitty-corner from the ice rink, and it is the nicest Panera we've ever been too.
Saturday was our temple day for the month. You know the drill: we got up early, drove to St. Louis for three and a half hours, went to the temple, grabbed some food (Applebee's, and I don't need to tell you what we ate), and drove home. This time, however, we made a few stops along the way. Brookie had cased out a pair of Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the St. Louis area, but the one that gives tours couldn't accommodate us. So we found the other one, which is all of a mile and a half from the temple. But, due to some activity in their driveway, we didn't drive up to it and take pictures. It's entirely possible that the wife of the original owner still occupies the residence, so some time before our March trip, we are going to write a letter asking permission to visit their home. Though we are unsure how a letter from a couple of strangers from Kansas City would be received, we hope that if we include a picture and the URL to Brookie's Frank Lloyd Wright blog, we could get a personal tour. It's an idea I had when we visited the three Kansas City FLW buildings.
So, although we didn't really get to visit another building, we hope that next month we're able to cross off the two St. Louis homes. In the meantime, Brookie is continuing to post pictures and stories about our past visits to Wright's structures.
Sunday we topped off our weekend with a healthy dose of West Side Story and some really good tacos. And that's what we did this weekend.
