Independence Day!

We had a great Independence Day! Savannah is always super excited for any day that Daddy doesn't have to go to work! In the morning we went to our ward's 4th of July breakfast. And I don't know why we never thought of it, but m&m's on pancakes are so good!

After the breakfast we drove about an hour up to a hiking trail in one of the nearby canyons. It was pretty busy, so there was no parking in the lots that were closest to the trail. But the ranger told us we could either get in line to take the shuttle up to the trailhead or we could take the "shortcut" through the meadow. That sounded very pleasant, so we opted for that option. It was a little bit harder than it sounded, but it was really lovely and so fun! It took Savannah a little while to get into the hike, but she did a great job! Even though it was a challenge, we had so much fun. And the best part was that there was still snow on the trail, and we had fun with that, and all the little runoff streams we had to navigate over. Some good teaching moments about how we can overcome any challenge if we just look ahead, plan, not be afraid.

The hike finished at Cecret Lake, a lake tucked away at the top of the mountains. It was so beautiful. We walked to the other side of the lake to find a nice shady spot for our picnic lunch. While Jackson was finishing up a bottle, Todd and Savannah checked out the baby salamanders swimming in the lake. Then we hiked back. At the end of the hike we waited for the return shuttle. It took a little longer than expected, but it was such a beautiful day!

In the evening, a little snitcher enjoyed feasting on some of Grandma's raspberries. When we got home at bedtime, we pretended like we were going to put Savannah down for bed, as usual. But we surprised her and asked if she would like to stay up to see fireworks...oh, right before that, a few fireworks had gone off and we asked her what she thought that sound was, she suggested maybe a hammer. The poor child didn't even know what fireworks were...she hadn't ever stayed up to see them. When we gave her that option of staying up, she was so excited. I don't know if she was more excited to stay up for fireworks, or that we would have to watch a movie until fireworks began. We watched about 45 minutes of The Sound of Music, before heading out to our backyard (taking the baby monitor with us...Jackson was soundly asleep in his crib).

Our townhouse is pretty high up and looks out over the whole valley so you can see most of the fireworks for all the cities and neighborhoods. But mostly we watched a local neighborhood display which was just as good as any of the city shows.

It was a great Independence Day!
