Looking at Cars We'll Never Own (and Some We'd Never Want)
Brookie and I attended the Kansas City Auto Show this past Friday night with some friends of ours. We love car shows. It doesn't matter if the cars are new and for sale, or old and restored. We just love looking at cars. Don't ask us anything about what's under the hood, or about the pros and cons of wishbone suspension, because we don't know. We just like how they look.
We look forward to the Auto Show every year. It's the perfect opportunity to slam doors, kick tires, and sit in some new cars without worrying about the annoying car salesman in the seat next to you. This year, one of the coolest things we saw was in a Jaguar. Brookie was commenting on the cool "ignition" button for the engine and then looked down and noticed there was no traditional shifter. We also had a chance to get up-close and personal with a few of the newest Honda models (I come from a long line of Honda snobs—but the ZION xB has stolen our hearts, and quite possibly, our brand loyalty), the CrossTour and the Insight. What amazed me about the CrossTour was how cavernous the opening was when we popped the rear hatch. The Insight seemed pretty cool too. But c'mon Honda. Don't you think it looks a little, tiny bit too much like a Prius? Oh, and while I'm on the Insight, does Honda think that only children ride in the back seats of cars? The head room there was ridiculous. I know we've been spoiled by the space in our xB, but this was a little silly.
And speaking of silly, does anyone else hear circus music in their head every time you see a Smart car in the wild? Any car that shakes back and forth when people get out and shut the door raises suspicions in my head. Then again, it looks like these two feel safe sitting in that car, doesn't it?
We had lots of fun Friday night at the auto show. But our night was not without some disappointment. Scion's booth, which is usually the life of the party, wasn't. They still had some CDs of the latest in underground hip-hop to give away, but there were only three cars on display, none of which were tricked out in any way. Tough times for the auto industry I guess.
We did finally get a chance to sit in one of the newer models on the xB. And, well, I can only hope that Scion gets off the road to conformism and back on track making cars that 20% of the population think are ugly, and 60% think are really, really ugly. That's your niche. Otherwise, in a few years, we may be in the market for a well-cared-for, low-mileage 2006 xB.
And that's what we did this weekend. Here is one last shot from the auto show of our friends, chillin' in their red VW convertible bug.
Go to the board!
