Savannah's Birthday & July

Savannah recently turned 2!

It was so fun planning a birthday for her. My mom always did a great job with birthdays, so it is so fun to get to do the same for our daughter. I remember once that my mom blew up a bunch of balloons (the same number for however old I was turning that year), and then I would get to pop one each day leading up to my birthday. Inside each one was a special surprise for that day. Anyway...Kansas City just got a new aquarium, and since it is a little bit pricier than we would do on just any normal day, we thought it would be a good birthday thing for Savannah this year. So, in conjunction with that, we decided that an under the sea party would be super fun!

I was so excited how everything turned out, from the invitations to the decorations, food, and games. We decorated the dining room with blue streamers on the ceiling to look like water, green streamers on the walls to look like sea weed, white balloons to look like pearls, blue balloon bubbles, and cut out paper fish taped in and out of the sea weed. My mom even sent us some seashells from the west coast to add to the decor, which we used on the food table. Savannah had some friends come over and we started with bubbles (the theme on the invites said, "Life is the Bubbles Under the Sea"). When we were done with the bubbles, we headed inside for some story time with under-the-sea-themed books. Then everyone made jellyfish out of paper plates, ribbon, and googly eyes. Then it was time to open presents and eat. We served whale crackers, shark watermelon, ice cream, and ocean cake with whale cookies. The cake was six layers, the bottom layer was a dark blue shade and gradually getting lighter with each layer, to look like the ocean. So fun and easy! After treats were devoured, everyone headed out to the front porch where all the kids got to go "fishing" on the pier for special prizes, like a stuffed whale, squirting fish, growing shark, and things like that. I think everyone had a good time, even the birthday girl! Here she is sporting her sea shell shorts and headband:

After a quick lunch, Savannah took a much needed rest, and we cleaned up! After nap time, we headed downtown to the new aquarium. I think Savannah liked just the experience of running around a new place. We all like the octopus, jellyfish, and the touch tank. They also had really cool rays and shark! After the aquarium, we went to Fritz's for dinner. The restaurant features a train system that delivers your food. And Savannah was so excited to get a sundae for her birthday treat!

Sunday was her actual birthday, so that day we just opened family presents, made pizza for dinner (her favorite...although recently she has been loving pancakes), and fruit pizza for dessert. It was a nice day together!

Besides all the birthday festivities, this month we also enjoyed the All-Star Festivities, including the Fan Fest downtown and a watch party at the Zoo, since we don't have a TV. The best part was that it was free admission into the zoo, with unlimited rides on the carousel and train. They had Frank White, a past Royals player, there to meet the fans and sign autographs. Luckily, we just happened to have a baseball in the car! We could only stay a little bit into the game, due to bedtime. But it was so fun to take our picnic dinner, and just be out there as a family.

Also this month, I have been helping some friends on the past three Wednesdays by covering their spot at the local Farmer's Market, while they were on vacation. In addition to their products, we also made blueberry scones for me to sell. While it was a lot of work, it was fun; and Savannah did good helping and just playing.

We had the chance to go take pictures of a friend's newborn. It was really fun, and we also learned a lot of fun editing techniques in the process. And I think they turned out great. We edited about 41 pictures for her, but here are three just to show off.

We got to go to a Royals game, where they were giving out Buck O'Neill bobbleheads. Imma and Patrick came too, as well as some friends we met through Families Supporting Adoption. We went to the game extra early so we could enjoy the kids play equipment before the game started. And thankfully, our seats were in the shade by game time.

It has been a really hot summer here in Kansas City, but we have been enjoying the time as a family. Now we look forward to the upcoming start of school, which means start of early-morning seminary!
