What We Did Last Weekend:
Fourth with Friends

Late again. Ever since my brother's wedding I haven't been able to get caught up. So here's what we did last weekend, and hopefully, I'll get something up for this weekend before too long.

* * * * *

I think it all started with a cake—a yogurt cake, to be exact. During my mission I had the great privilege of living with Adelaide Pires, or Irmã Adelaide, as we affectionately called her. Did our laundry. Made sure we had hot water bottles at the foot of our beds each night. And even stole our shoes one night after we'd gone to bed and shined them. She also cooked for us.

One thing there was always enough of was cake. She had found a cake recipe on a yogurt label that used the yogurt container as the unit of measurement, and she always made sure there was a cake on the table in the front room. She would later say that she never made as much cake as she did when I lived at her house with my companions.

Her house was only about a two-minute walk from the mission office. We were the first missionaries she had housed that weren't stationed in the office. Irmã Adelaide loved the Elders and we routinely had the office missionaries join us for meals. One of them had been dubbed, "The Most Hated Elder in the Mission," or something like that. He was the mission financial secretary and apparently no one liked him because of the heartless way he would deny their requests for more money after spending their allotment on Oreos and other junk. And he thought he knew how to cut a cake better than I did. I'm pretty sure that's how it all started.

I bumped into him after transferring to BYU, and we've been good friends ever since. Now, just over 11 years after teaching him how to properly slice a bundt cake, he, his wife, and his 10-month-old son came to Kansas City to visit us for the weekend.

Friday night we treated them to some darn-good barbecue, if I do say so myself. Baby back ribs smothered in a homemade apple cider barbecue sauce, with sides of cheesy corn bake and Jack Stack BBQ Beans.

Saturday we got up a little early and took them to the best farmer's market in the world (I don't think that's exaggerating at all). The five of us wandered up and down the isles of merchants sampling everything from black bean mango dip to fresh peaches. We bought some great produce and some bread from Bloom Baking Co. Then, we went home for a nap.

That afternoon we drove to the Plaza and had lunch at in•gré•di•ent (Great food, not-so-great website).

After lunch it was time for another nap before dinner. After dinner and just before bedtime we stopped at Target and bought three games. Those of you that have known me for some time can close your mouths now. I like games. I just have to turn the competitive juices way down, that's all. We bought Rummykube, Phase 10, and Old Maid (for when we're entertaining the younger crowd). Saturday night we played a full game of Phase 10 and had a great time.

Sunday we fasted, and so did many of you. Thanks. Our friends left after sacrament meeting, but not before our bishop tried to sell them on moving to the ward. "We've got homes. We've got plenty of jobs. We've got callings."

That night we had dinner with some other friends—delicious barbecued chicken and baked beans. Mmmmm. Don't you just love the food at 4th of July barbecues?

And that's what we did last weekend. Here's a hint about what we did this weekend: It started off with 17 hours of driving.

Go to the board!

  1. We're so glad you drove 17 hours just to see us :) The only down side is that now my mind seems to think you're coming back again in another three weeks or so after you guys go. Looking forward to spending some more time with ya before it's that time!
